What is autism?
Autism is a complex, developmental disorder that is characterized by social awkwardness and repetitive behavior.
Is Asperger Syndrome autism?
Yes, it is one of pervasive developmental disorders also known as autism spectrum disorder.
Is there a cure?
No, there is no cure at this time, although people with autism can lead successful, and productive lives. If they want, they can attend college, they can get a job, they can get married.
What causes autism?
It is not clear what causes autism. There has been a significant amount of research around finding the cause, but nothing has been directly associated with causing autism.
Is it my fault that my child has autism?
No, of course not! We don’t know what causes autism, but we do know that it is not the “fault” of anyone.
How do I know if my child has autism?
By looking at the developmental milestones, you will have an indication of a delay, in combination with behaviors that are repetitive, lack of social understanding, and difficulty communicating.
Can an adult have autism?
Yes, autism is a lifelong disorder. Many adults, though, don’t get a diagnosis of autism until later in life.
What do I do if I think my child / family member has autism?
You can contact the Autism Society of Indiana at 800-609-8449 to get specific information about who can perform a diagnosis, as well as get support, referrals, and training.
