Area Support Coordinator Program

Individual & Family Support provided by the ASI Area Support Coordinators

Our Area Support Coordinators are personally affected by autism (or are on the spectrum themselves) and have a solid foundation of what it is like to care for an individual with autism spectrum disorder. Because every part of Indiana has different needs, our Area Support Coordinators live in the communities they serve, with a goal of knowing the services provided by Developmental Disability providers, Community Mental Health Centers, Schools, Hospitals, and State Agencies in their area. Our Area Support Coordinators take calls from families needing support, they conduct training for families, providers, and the general public, and they build partnerships with local providers.

Each of ASI’s Area Support Coordinators provides highly customized support and education to individuals affected by autism and ensure everyone who engages with they feel they have a committed partner in their lifelong journeys. Utilizing a Person-Centered Planning approach, our Area Support Coordinators:

  • Provide one-on-one, peer-to-peer support to individuals and families in need of information, resources, referrals, and any other information related to autism;
  • Provide care coordination to families to identify areas of need and strategies for meeting identified needs;
  • Identify service gaps in each region and build direct relationships with providers and advocacy organizations to fill gaps;
  • Participate in district committees and task forces to understand statewide needs and provide input to meet those needs;
  • Deliver training to health care providers, therapists, and other service providers to increase their abilities to meet the needs of clients with autism;
  • Connect with local support groups or initiate new support groups in regions where existing groups don’t exist.

In addition to the in-depth support offered to those affected by autism, ASI’s Area Support Coordinator also provide assistance through the following individualized training at no cost:

  • stress management
  • behavioral intervention support strategies
  • community integration
  • family dynamics
  • treatment regimens and use of equipment
